Happy Thanksgiving: Thoughts on Love and Trust

Happy Thanksgiving to the Deepwater family. We shared this note with our investors. May your holidays be filled with love and trust.

In keeping with tradition, I’d like to share a quick note of gratitude. Because of you, we have the honor of scouring the planet for entrepreneurs with uncomfortable levels of intelligence, insight and persistence. We call them alien founders.

I recently came across one such founder who shared a simple and profound insight during an interview as he explained his approach to building great products for his customers.

“There are two states of mind that I talk about a lot… love and trust. First of all, you have to love the experience. If you don’t inspire [love] in your customer, you don’t have a business. The second thing is trust… People will not work with a company or technology that they don’t trust. We go above and beyond to be absolutely transparent and open and robust and trustworthy.”  — Edo Liberty, CEO of Pinecone

Here’s a link to the interview on YouTube, beginning with this quote.

In short, this is what we aim to do. Paradoxically, on the highest order and at the deepest level, we aim to provide investment opportunities that inspire love and trust in our partners.

Our goal is for you to love the experience and outcome of investing with Deepwater. Those reasons vary: You may love discovering the next frontier technologies alongside us; You may love funding the ideas that will change how we live, work and play in the future; Or, you may love the prospect of the financial returns that venture capital investing can generate. Regardless, we hope you love investing with us.

And, of course, our relationship is based on trust at its core. Without trust we cannot act as stewards of your capital. That is why we are committed to full transparency, consistent communication, and leading with bad news, so that you don’t have to excavate it.

For this, we are deeply grateful. We are thankful for the opportunity to do what we do. We love it. And we are thankful for the trust-based relationships that we’ve built along the way.

May your Thanksgiving weekend be filled with love and trust!
